And I'm Floating In a Most Peculiar Way
There are thousands of proper eulogies to be found again today for David Bowie. If you want poignant words or testimonials, you don't have to look far - just a little further than here.
Bowie was the first rock star that I recognized was a Rock Star, with capital letters. I didn't really understand the concept until I saw him as an "Oddity", a Star Man, and an Elf King, the Thin White Duke - or whatever it was at the time - in equal measure. I knew he was pretending, but it was also completely authentic. There were plenty of people whose videos and album covers told me, on sight, that they were trying too damn hard. They wanted it too much, whatever 'it" was. Bowie was very real and also out-of-this-world bigger than life. Each version of Bowie challenged us until we came around to understand some element of his vision (or maybe not) and then he changed again and kept us on our toes. People will say that his willingness to be weird helped others become themselves. I'm sure that's true. To me, he went beyond that: he made being "other", or weird, or challenging the norm, beautiful.
And so, how lucky we were to have him. Talk about the characters if you want - but for fuck's sake, go find the music.
